Summer is finally here! And whilst we’re looking forward to the (hopefully) warmer days, don’t forget the risk of dehydration when exercising in the heat.

How Much Does Water Intake Affect Our Workouts?

Water is critical for our overall well-being. As anthropologist Loren Eisley said: “If there is magic on the planet, it is contained in water”.

Water protects our brain, our nervous system, and other internal organs. It also aids digestion and most importantly, fuels our muscles.

Another effect of good hydration, as John Hopkins Medicine points out, is that water helps to cushion our joints. If we’re dehydrated, it can have an effect on our speed and flexibility. So if you’re feeling sluggish at the gym over the summer, check in with your hydration first.

What Can You Do to Stay on Top of Your Hydration?

Now that we’ve established how important it is to stay hydrated, let’s have a look at some tips that will help you ensure that you never go thirsty from NHS’ Eatwell Guide:

  • Invest in a decent water bottle and keep it with you at all times. I find that simply having a bottle on my desk during work hours makes me want to keep sipping.
  • Add natural flavour to your water, for instance, by adding slices of lemon, berries, cucumber, or fresh ginger (or maybe Robinson’s summer berries?)
  • If you’re someone who easily forgets to drink water, set regular reminders on your phone to help you remember. Try having a sip every 30mins.
  • Make it a habit to drink a large glass of water before you eat. Not only will this keep you hydrated, but also help take the edge of your appetite and reduce chances of over-eating.
  • When you’re exercising, drink plenty of water earlier in the day, so you arrive at Beckwith hydrated. This will you improve your performance and make sure you’re well hydrated for your workout.
  • Finally, don’t wait until you feel thirsty to have a drink. Use the tips above and make a conscious effort to stay hydrated. Your body will thank you!
