Step Classes at Beckwith Health Club

Beckwith Health Club has a lively class timetable, which you can see on our website. There is always something exciting on, and it’s always taught by the lovely and expertly trained Beckwith staff. One of the classes Beckwith offers is step.

Taught by Emma, these classes are popular and a great way to have a sweat in a fun environment. Here’s some more information about step… we’ll see you in class soon!

What is Step?

“Step” is actually short for “Step Aerobics”. Classes use a stationary block which you step up and down onto. This might not sound like it could have many benefits, but the opposite is true.

Step is a high-intensity exercise which uses both cardio and weight training to get your heart rate up and tone your muscles.

One of the great things about this class, aside from the excellent health benefits, is that the workouts are usually matched to a musical rhythm, making the classes very fun and different each time!

Benefits of a Step Class

So, what are the benefits of getting involved?

Step gets both your heart and your lunge working at a high intensity rate, meaning the sport is great for improving your cardiovascular health. What this can do for you is to reduce your chances of developing a cardiovascular illness, and overall improves your stamina.

In this sense, it is equivalent to a fast run, but as a low impact exercise, it is more accessible for those who don’t enjoy running or whose joints prevent them from being able to do so.

As you’ll be bearing your body weight, and potentially added weight in the form of dumbbells when you step up and down, your body is burning a lot of calories during a step class. In this sense, it is an excellent exercise for weight loss.

Lastly, it has been shown to improve bone density as well as balance and mobility. The exercises strengthen your legs and improve their ability to bear weight, which has a positive effect on bone density.

This is particularly important for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.
