When it comes to the reasons we love Beckwith Health Club, we could talk about our varied class schedule, top-of-the-line gym equipment, and our great value membership fees. But when we look at what sets us apart, it’s our excellent team.

Their friendly dispositions, professional attitudes and wealth of health and fitness knowledge stand out daily.

We’d love for our clients to get to know them better, so we’ve tracked down Rik, Beckwith’s Operations Manager, to answer all our burning questions.

What first motivated you to work in fitness?

I trained and worked as a professional dancer, but unfortunately, injuries resulted in a shorter career than I had anticipated. Fitness was an obvious industry to move into and so I re-trained as a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer back in 2004.

How long have you been working in the industry?

I worked in Gyms and Health Clubs across London for 7 years, and that, over time, migrated into Club/Operational Management. After relocating to Harrogate in 2011, I decided on a side step into the Leisure Tourism Industry as the Visitor Services Manager at RHS Harlow Carr. I never intended on staying away so long, but I’m delighted to finally be back in the fitness world again.

What drew you to working at Beckwith?

It’s a great little gym; what more can I say? I’ve been a member previously, and everyone, including the team, is so friendly. I also value that it’s an independent business, not a big chain.

What are your top tips for staying in shape?

I’m the wrong person to ask, I’m not as in shape as I used to be!  It’s all about balance, eating right and training right and everything in moderation. I’ve definitely learnt the hard way over the years.

What would you recommend to help people anxious about working out in a gym?

It can be daunting, but of all the gyms I have worked in, Beckwith is the friendliest, so there isn’t anything to worry about. Sometimes it’s good to train with a friend, for support and motivation. Or why not book a class, you’ll soon make some new gym friends.

Rik loves to join in the classes too!

And lastly.. what’s a random fun fact about you?

I performed with Darcy Bussell at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden!

Thanks so much, Rik!
